Tips to speak in neutral accent:

Listen to how native English speakers use and speak the language.Try to watch some best and healthy English movies which will improve over all communication skill. Do not speak too fast. Keep your rate and speed of speech under control. Study dictionary to understand the meaning of the word and its spelling and also mainly its pronunciation. Also listen to audio clips and videos to boost your confidence while speaking. Also make sure you record your speech on your mobile’s voice recorder and check it for yourself. Read news papers and improve your vocabulary that is regularly used. Learn phonetics and its sounds. Vowel sounds and consonants.Listen to news on television and understand how they speak the language. Do some jaw related exercises and take a course on voice and accent.

A vowel sound is made by shaping the air as it leaves the mouth. There are four types of vowel in English:

Long monothongs (1, 6, 8, 9, 11 in the diagram)
Diphthongs (13 – 19 in the diagram)
Weak vowels (1, 2, 5 , 9 in the diagram)

A consonant sound is made by blocking the air as it moves through the mouth. There are different types of consonant sound:

Plosive – explosive sounds (20 – 26 in the diagram)
Fricative – friction sounds (27 – 34 in the diagram)
Affricate – plosive followed by fricative (35 – 36 in the diagram)
Nasal – partly made through the nose (37 – 39 in the diagram)
Approximant – vowel-like consonants (40-43 in the diagram)
Glottal – made in the throat (44-45 in the diagram)
Some consonant sounds do not use the voice box when they are produced, these are blue in the diagram.

What is an Accent?

Your accent is the way you say your words and sentences, rather than the actual words you choose to say. The following aspects will affect your accent:

The position of your lips, tongue and jaw when you say a sound.
The length and quality of the sounds you make.
The choice of consonant or vowel you make.
Where you place the stress in a word or sentence.
The range of pitch and tone you use when you speak (intonation).
The way you join your syllables together.
English has a huge number of accents worldwide. These are normally split into two categories: native and non-native.
